How to Get Rid of Raccoon Eyes

March 22nd, 2012

Raccoon eyes is a term to describe dark circles under the eyes or when women's mascara has run and left them looking like a raccoon. If your raccoon eyes occur frequently and are not a result of smeared makeup, there are measures you can take to rid yourself of them. If your makeup is to blame, you simply need to switch products.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Concealer
  • Foundation
  • Waterproof mascara
    • 1

Examine your lifestyle and determine whether it may be causing the dark circles. Determine whether you are sleeping enough. According to the National Sleep Foundation, four to five hours or less can have negative health effects. Web MD says not sleeping enough can be the cause of dark circles. Also, make sure you are eating a balanced, vitamin-rich diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies, nasal congestion, smoking, stress, chronic alcohol use or even heredity may be the cause. If you live a healthy lifestyle, but still wake up with raccoon eyes, see a dermatologist who can recommend a lightening cream, laser treatments or even surgery to get rid of the problem.

    • 2

Conceal permanent raccoon eyes by wearing foundation, and then under-eye concealer over it, according to Web MD. Top that with loose powder. Choose a concealer based on the color of your dark circles and use a yellow-toned concealer for blueish circles and a green-toned concealer for reddish circles. Also make sure the concealer is two shades lighter than your skin, according to Beauty Biz. Combat your dark circles daily by using a collagen-building cream with retinol, according to "Real Simple" magazine. A vitamin C cream may also help by brightening skin tone. Make sure to wear a sunscreen every day, or you will nullify any work the retinol or vitamin C have done.

    • 3

Change mascara and eyeliner brands if you find yourself with raccoon eyes at the end of the day. Rubbing your eyes or tearing up may cause your makeup to flake and run. Try waterproof eyeliners and mascaras or products touted to stay put. Read reviews of eye makeup products to make sure they don't run before you purchase them. Other consumers will be helpful critics when you are trying to narrow down the perfect eye makeup.

How to Install a Lift Kit on a Jeep Cherokee

January 31st, 2012
How to Install a Lift Kit on a Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is a vehicle that many purchase with the hope of installing aftermarket parts to make it a cross between a passenger vehicle and an off-road recreational vehicle. Installing a lift kit is a classic modification to the Cherokee. It can be done in a home garage provided that you have the necessary tools. It is essential to note that after you install a lift kit, the handling of your vehicle will be significantly different.

Difficulty:
Challenging

Instructions

  1. Lifting Front End Suspension

    • 1

Loosen the lug nuts on the vehicle. Doing this before you raise the vehicle off the ground is essential; otherwise the tires will rotate when you are trying to loosen the lug nuts.

    • 2

Lift the front end of the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame. Before moving on to the next step, make sure that the vehicle is properly supported.

    • 3

Remove tires from front of vehicle.

    • 4

Place jack under the front axle of the vehicle to support it, but do not raise vehicle.

    • 5

Remove front shocks, sway bar links and tie rod ends. This is also the time to loosen the control arm bolts, but do not remove them.

    • 6

Lower jack slightly to allow axle to droop, being careful that you do not lower so much that the brake lines are damaged.

    • 7

Remove coil springs, bump stops and bump stop mounting cup. To make re-installation less confusing, mark springs so they are re-installed on the correct side of the vehicle.

    • 8

Install new spacers. The spacers used will depend on the desired lift height.

    • 9

Re-install bump stop mounting cup, bump stops and springs. Make sure you re-install springs on the correct side of the vehicle.

    • 10

Re-install sway bar links, tie rod ends and shocks.

    • 11

Re-mount front tires. After lowering vehicle to the ground, torque bolts to manufacturer's specifications.

    Rear Suspension Lift

    • 1

Raise rear of the vehicle by placing jack under the differential.

    • 2

Support vehicle by placing jack stands under the frame. Jack stands must be high enough that the tires will not touch the ground when you lower the jack.

    • 3

Remove tires and wheels from vehicle.

    • 4

Disconnect sway bar links, shock mounts and rear track arm.

    • 5

Lower rear differential enough that the springs come loose. Be careful when doing this so you do not damage the brake lines.

    • 6

Remove springs, bump stops and bump stop mounting cup.

    • 7

Install spring spacer and replace bump stop mounting cup.

    • 8

Re-install bump stops and springs. Make sure these are replaced on the same side they came off of.

    • 9

Raise differential and make sure springs are properly in saddles.

    • 10

Re-connect track arm, tie rod ends, sway bar links and shocks.

    • 11

Re-mount tires. Torque to manufacturer specifications once the vehicle in on the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the vehicle is secured by jack stands under the frame.

  • Once you have lifted the frame, the vehicle handling may feel unstable. Be cautious when taking turns or manuvering over objects to avoid a roll-over accident.

  • Check torque on all lug nuts after you have driven your Jeep 500 miles with the new lift kit.

What Cleans Throw-up Off of a Mattress?

January 25th, 2012

Sometimes there's little warning before your system revolts, making it quite easy for throw-up to end up in places you don't want it. Throw-up not only smells bad, but it leaves stubborn stains behind as well. A good night's rest is unlikely if evidence of throw-up on your mattress lingers. There are several items you may already have around the home that prove useful in eliminating this problem.

  1. Items to Remove the Throw-up

    • Don rubber gloves, as removing throw-up is a gruesome chore. An old towel is helpful for scooping up the solids so you can dispose of them. Use plastic bags, newspapers or paper towels if you don't have towels to spare for this particular chore. An easy way to get rid of the throw-up is to use a wet/dry vacuum, if you have one handy. Make sure to clean it out as soon as possible afterward. Check the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning it out.

    Products for Removing the Stain

    • The suds from soapy water can be efficient in cleaning up these unsightly stains. Add several squirts of dish soap to a quart of warm water and use an electric mixer to create suds. Dip a sponge in the suds and wipe the stain. Rinse the area with a solution of warm water and white vinegar in equal parts. Don't pour the solution onto the mattress, as this will oversaturate it. Sponge it onto the area with a clean cloth or sponge and blot the area dry immediately with a dry towel.

    What Removes the Smell?

    • The optimal way to both allow your mattress to dry and help with odor elimination is to drag it outside and let the sunshine take care of it. Sunshine works wonders on stains and odors. Have a friend help you to carry the mattress outside and lay it on a blanket in the sunshine. If the weather isn't cooperating, sprinkle baking soda on the dampened area and leave it overnight. If you can't wait that long, let the baking soda sit for at least three or four hours. Vacuum it up with your vacuum cleaner's brush attachment.

    Considerations

    • If you opt to use a product you purchase at the store, ensure that it has enzyme fighting capabilities. It may also boast that it's good for cleaning urine and blood, which are also organic stains. Read the manufacturer's directions carefully and follow them closely. For whatever product you use, make sure that you don't oversaturate the mattress, as this can lead to mildew problems later.

Proper Eyelash Curling Techniques

December 27th, 2011

Everyone likes to accentuate their eyes. It makes you look awake and attractive, and many women find curling their eyelashes before using mascara-or even without mascara use-can make your eyes come alive.

  1. Conventional Curling

    • Most of us have seen the classic eyelash curler sold in department and drug stores. It looks like something used to pinch off small pieces of dough. But if used correctly, it can be your best weapon in your beauty arsenal. The classic has a small piece of plastic between the two sides of the crimper. First, make sure that plastic is there and in the slot securely. Place the curler against your eye and place the lash between the two sides. Check to make sure you have no eyelid skin in the way, then squeeze the handles together. The lashes are gently caught between the sides and squeezed to make them curl up toward your eyebrow. You can continue squeezing down your lashes and away from your face to get a more intense curl. If you wear mascara, put it on your curled lashes as soon as possible.

    Curling With Heat

    • You can intensify the standard curling technique with heat by using your hairdryer. Turn the heat to low and let it blow directly on the curler to heat it. Test it against your hand to make sure it's not too hot, then curl as before. You also can use hot water to heat the curler. Or you can choose a heated lash curler, available in most beauty supply stores. This device heats itself with the use of a standard AAA battery. The wand you apply to your lashes looks exactly like a mascara wand, and it gently heats up when turned on. Then you wisp the wand over your lashes, bending them slightly upward to curl.

    Unconventional Curling

    • No time or money to buy a curler? Go to your cutlery drawer and get a spoon. Make sure it is clean, then place one edge of the spoon's rounded bowl against the underneath edge of your lashes, then turn the spoon over toward your eye. The spoon pushes the lashes up and creates a gentle curl. You can heat the spoon for more effect. Or, for a very slight uplift, apply mascara, let it dry, then take your clean finger and gently push the lashes up from the underside with the edge of your finger. The mascara will act as a fixative, and the gentle pressure curls your lashes lightly.

How to Use a MaxiPad

December 8th, 2011
How to Use a MaxiPad

When a maxipad is put on improperly, a woman could end up with an embarrassing stain on her clothes or underwear. Many of these stains may even become permanent if the menstrual blood isn't washed out in time. However, if you follow the simple guidelines outlined below, you won't have to deal with these issues, since your maxipad would be in a better position to do its job.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Maxipad
  • Maxipad wrapper (optional)
    • 1

Open the maxipad's wrapper. To do this, gently pull apart the flaps located in the center of the wrapper.

    • 2

Remove the maxipad from its wrapper. As you are doing this, you will notice that the maxipad is folded up. Go on and unfold it as you are removing the wrapper.

    • 3

Tear off the strip of paper located on the back of the maxipad. Make sure you do this slowly, because if you tear too fast, you might leave some of the paper behind. When this happens, the maxipad loses its adhesiveness.

    • 4

Press the maxipad against the seat of your underwear. Make sure it is right in the middle, since this helps avoid leakage.

    • 5

Properly dispose of your old maxipad. If you're changing out maxipads, you will want to ensure that you're throwing them away in the right manner. The easiest way to do this is to fold the maxipad up and wrap toilet paper around it. If you want to be more meticulous, you can place it back in the new pad's original wrapper. However, bear in mind that if your maxipad is really soaked, your hands might get messy doing things this way. In most situations, toilet paper is better, but just make sure that the pad and its contents aren't exposed.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can't go wrong with pads that are extra absorbent, especially if you have heavy flows.

  • Change your pad every four to six hours to ensure maximum cleanliness.

  • Do not wear maxipads when you go swimming, as they will swell up in your bathing suit.
